Root canal helps preserve dead teeth through pulp removal and cleaning out of your tooth’s
internal canals. It is considered one of the few lasting solutions to serious tooth decay and the
pain that comes with it.
Signs that you need root canal
Too much pain in the tooth that doesn’t improve or gets worse by day could be a sign you’re
developing cavities and that you need root canal treatment.
Let your dentist help you establish the cause of the pain and determine whether you need the
procedure. Other signs to look out for include tooth discoloration and sensitivity to cold or hot
foods and drinks.
Why you need root canal
Dentists do not have many ways of treating tooth decay or stopping the problem from
spreading to neighboring teeth. Tooth removal is the only other recommendable solution but
this is too long, costly and complicated with similar results as
root canal.
Root canals remove the decaying part of the tooth and retain its structure, which will feel, look
and be as useful as the other natural teeth in your mouth upon recovery.
At the beginning, your dentist or endodontist will numb the tooth and the area surrounding it
to make the procedure painless.
He/she will then place a rubber dam on the operative area to keep the tooth free from saliva
and to prevent chips from flying into the throat.
Next they will drill the upper part of your tooth to create an opening through which they will
pull out the unhealthy flesh from the canals. After all the debris has been scooped out, you will
be washed clean, the empty cleft filled and the opening at the top sealed.
You may have to wait another appointment to have the repaired tooth crowned.
